I have been an admirer of Kanika Dhillon- writer of Judgmental Hai Kya since I saw Manmarziyaan.

So unlike most people who went to watch this movie for Kangana Ranaut, I went to watch Judgmental hai kya for Kanika Dhillon ( You need to support a fellow writer 🙂 )

Writer Kanika Dhillon

So here’s my review of the movie.

Story:

Bobby is a voice-over artist but suffers from mental illness. She lives the character she voice-overs and those live in her head long after the dubbing is done. Meanwhile, a tenant couple comes live in her bungalow. Bobby feels that the tenant is planning the murder of his wife and she tries all her wits to frame him.

What’s good :

Kangana has portrayed the characters of Bobby superbly. She owns Bobby and we immediately buy into the character and her absurd yet entertaining world. Rajkumar too looks super dashing has got the pulse of the character perfect.

The cinematography, background score and attention to detail is on point.

What could have been better :

This is where I see a strong correlation between Kanika’s all 3 movies

Manmarziyaan, Kedarnath & Judgemental Hai kya

The 3rd Act :

All these movies have a superb 1st Act and good 2nd act but things start wobbling in the 3rd act. In Manmarziyaan the chemistry and explosion among 2 characters happen beautifully. I loved the bold and beautiful Rumi played by Tapsee, as well as the DJ Vicky Sandhu played by Vicky Kaushal who just doesn’t have the IQ or the longterm caliber of a stable partner. So until Rumi’s marriage to Robbie, the story had a superb grip but then things start going haywire and just simply drag. So, in the end, you just don’t get the satisfaction of a movie that completed a full circle. It feels like having mind-blowing starter & main course but a bad desert that just ruins it.

Something similar happens in Judgemental hai kya. Bobby who head is filled with a world of characters and story has been beautifully portrayed and you love the world she has built in her mind. Raj Kumar’s entry as Keshav and the subsequent cat & mouse chase adds the perfect spice but the 3rd act where she moves to London just doesn’t feel natural progression. The twist happening in the end just didn’t go well with me. It just feels an afterthought.

It feels like Kanika put a lot of thought on characters and their strength and weakness but not that much on the story as a whole.

So the 3rd Act curse continues …

It is still a good movie … especially the two acts and we as the audience should support writers like Kanika who are boldly sketching uniques characters and breaking away from the formula based Bollywood movie.

My only wish is Kanika fix the 3rd act well so that her upcoming movies become even more appealing and satisfying and become a roaring success on the Box Office.
