Man … this was mother of all blunders 😀

  1. A superstar and perfectionist
  2. A Bollywood legend
  3. One of the biggest production houses
  4. Unlimited budget

And what do we get?

A tedious 3 hours of nothing. Absolute garbage so to speak.

So what went wrong and why am I happy ?

First of all let me be clear, I am an Aamir khan fan. I love almost all of his movies apart from a few painful ones like MELA (and now off course Thugs of Hindustan gets added to this list). But I am not a blind fan follower and hence I can say this was a bad choice Aamir made.

  1. Script /Story/Character development …. anyone….?

The single most important thing that went wrong with these Thugs is they conned their own script. It’s an age old story of vengeance of a princess to reclaim her rightful kingdom. Nothing wrong in it … It’s the same story line used in a lot of movies , the recent one being Baahubali ( which made 1000 cr at Box Office ) . But Baahubali had characters we rooted for … from Baahubali to Shivagami to Devasena. We wanted them to win… we felt bad when they lost… We laughed and cried with them.

But here… The princess played by Fatima did not evoke any emotion. No one cared if she won or lost and same went for Khudabaksh played by Big B . Aamir Khan did play a conniving Trickster Mallah and gets the best line but whats the point ? I dont care for you .. i am not involved (The firangi avatar looked straight up stupid )

  1. Soul missing

Every great movie has a soul. It’s something that cannot be quantified but it’s there . Let’s take Dangal for example. You feel the movie is alive … all characters put together lend the movie a unique heart beat. You feel the essence of the movie… that’s something missing here badly and that’s the curse of a formula type Bollywood movie .. In earlier days it still worked, but now it does not (Race 3, Jab Harry met Sejal are some recent examples)

  1. Director Saab.. kya phukte ho ..

Vijay Acharya is a director who is known to take great cast and make of movie that’s just plain average… Don’t go by my word, his last 2 movies were DHOOM 3 and TASHAN . Do I need to say more ?

DHOOM 3 was still was okay compared to TASHAN ( just for fun .. if you want to torture any of your friends , tell them to watch this movie and come up with a one liner story 😛 ).

So clearly the movie’s captain was the Achilles heel here. Great actors cannot substitute for an average director or script.

Why am I happy?

Simple. This movie is going to send a very strong message to Bollywood. Stars don’t sell movies anymore , that era is dead . Story , direction, cinematography is what makes a movie sell. The best examples are the recent few films that made 100+ crores – ( Stree , Badhai Ho , Andhadhund ) . All these films worked primarily because of story… No one flocked the theatres to see Rajkumar or Ayushman .. They went to see a great movie. And that’s how it should be .

So Karan Johar , Aditya Chopra … please take note .. Invest in a good story/script and not stars( and their children) and your business will grow leaps and bounds…. and we as an audience will get to watch great movies ..
