Number 3- Kaithi (Directed by Lokesh Kanakaraj )
It is rare to find a mass masala movie with original content and Kaithi is that rare gem. A prisoner who was released is planning to meet his daughter but is abruptly arrested by a constable for sporting a beard. he lands himself in an even bigger mess when he has to drive a truck full of police officers who have been drugged.
The movie is a nail-biting thriller from start to end and is super entertaining to watch. There are some mass scenes that look out of place but if you overlook it then this is one hell of a movie. Karthi plays the role of a village guy who looks like a common man but has a very different side to his personality that comes out in crisis situations.
Special mention to George Maryan who plays the role of a newly transferred constable who is burdened with the responsibility of safeguarding the entire police station all by himself and 3 college students.
Number 2- Asuran (Directed by Vetrimaaran)
2018 Epic Gangster movie Vada Chennai proved Dhanush and Vetrimaaran as an explosive combination.
Here they tackle a very sensitive topic of caste difference and the subsequent power struggle for some and survival for others. Sivasaami is a small farmer living with his wife, 2 sons, and a daughter.
When Sivasaami’s younger son slays the landlord Narasimhan to avenge his elder brother, their world is torn apart. Now they have to run into the jungle in order to survive. Sivasaami has seen all this before in his younger days and it’s like the worst nightmare coming back again.
This movie is out and out Dhanush and his impeccable acting. He nails the role of an aged farmer who just wants to survive and not get into any trouble with the right tone, expression, and body language. but he also plays a younger self who is fearless and fierce with an equal amount of ease and conviction.
This movie proves again that Dhanush is the most talented actors in Indian cinema. Manju Warrier who plays his equally fierce wife too matches the energy of Dhanush and portrays the character effortlessly.
No.1 – Super Deluxe (Directed by Thiagarajan)
This movie has 4 spectacular performances that will leave you to spell bound.
Fahaad Faasil as the husband who finds his wife with her ex-boyfriend, who dies in the middle of their lovemaking is just brilliant. The way in which he emotes through his eyes is just effortless.
Vijay Sethupathi as the transgender gives his career-best performance. He shows the plight of a person trying to live life on his own terms and fighting the ruthless world that keeps mocking and torturing him for his choices.
Bagavathi Perumal as corrupt cop Berlin is just terrifying. His laughter will just creep you out. He tells his most outrageous, wicked and sick plans to people as casually as you would tell what you had for breakfast
The best of the lot was Ashwanth as Rasukutty. This child at the age of 8 gave a performance that will put even actors with decades of experience to shame. His performance has the rare authenticity and innocence that just makes the character super loving.
