Sometimes I wonder what makes Tamil and Malayam filmmakers take bold and unique concepts and storyline while the much bigger Hindi Film Industry keeps fondling with its Love story and larger than life Hero concept. Is the pedigree different? Is the audience different? What is it that gives them the balls to helm the craziest and whackiest but equally beautifully movies and stories?

All these questions popped in my mind when I saw the Movie – Super Deluxe made by Thiagarajan Kumarraja. It is one of those few movies that you instantly realize that it is going to become a cult classic in the future.

This movie takes topics like adultery, murder, corruption, transgender, blind faith and intertwines it with honesty, comedy, truth and even spirituality. Never have I seen a movie balance such extreme topics with immense grace and style.

Storyline :

There 3 different stories running parallel to each other who stumble upon each other at some point in time.

First Story is about a woman who had called her ex-boyfriend home when her husband was away and while having sex her boyfriend dies.

The second story is about teenagers who have planned to watch a porn movie only to release that one their friend’s mother is the actress in the movie

The third story is about a family who is waiting for their son/husband/father to come home after 7 years only to find out that he has become a transgender.

As interesting these story sounds, it even gets interesting when all these worlds start colliding with each other.

Technical Aspects:

The cinematography, sound design, and direction are superbly done. The colors are in high contrast everywhere giving it a slick look. This movie falls in the category of a slow burn. It takes its own time to bloom and hence the slow pace but a true movie buff will thoroughly enjoy the entire run. It like a Biryani that’s cooked overnight … your patience is awarded a taste that lingers long after you have consumed it.

But the best part is the ensemble of powerful actors.

Although each and everyone has given superb performances, I would like to talk about 3 performances that stood out in this movie and are going to stay with you for a long long time.

Vijay Sethupati as Shilpa

This guy … what can I say … what a brilliant performance. I loved Vijay since I had seen his movie Vikram Vedha. He is just effortless in whichever character he portrays. In Super Deluxe, he played the role of a Transgender, which in itself is something that a lot of superstars shy away from, but not him. Vijay embraced the role to such a level that each and every nuance of character many times in silence and just by facial expression has been portrayed brilliantly. A special mention to the scene under a subway where he confronts a priest and breaks down is so well done that it sends shivers down your spine. Vijay has aced each and every character line of a transgender and it is such a joy to watch him on screen. He should definitely get each and every award that there is out there.

Vijay’s most powerful scene

Ashwanth Ashokkumar as Rasukutty

This little one is surprised the hell out of me. What a cracker he is. At such a tender age, he just owns the screen when he is on. He has portrayed a son whose father came back after 7 long years and has now become a transgender. His one on one with his father, mother, his altercation with his friends is a treat to watch. The honesty in which he acts just makes you fall in love with him. He definitely has a great future.

Rasukutty’s infectious smile

Bagavathi Perumal as Berlin

There is a certain formula for a villain in Indian cinema. He looks menacing, talks loud and is always angry with some trademark dialogues. But Berlin, the police inspector played by Bagavathi is very different. He cracks jokes, laughs and smiles all the time but I can guarantee you have not seen such a dreadful villain in a long long time. He is shameless, selfish, sex addict and just destroys people in front of him for his personal pleasure. And he keeps smiling and laughing while he is doing it. He will make you fear, cringe, look away bite your nails or even pause the movie, and you would pray that he never ever encounter anyone like him.

His expression says it all

Conclusion :

If you are a hardcore movie buff , you must not miss watching this movie. Also please note this is a powerful coctail, its handover will last for atleast a couple of days. Â
